文物特色

纪念碑高约5米，宽为2.7米，碑座呈圆拱形，中嵌石碑。碑的正面为碑文，碑文系冯友兰先生撰写，闻一多先生篆刻、罗庸先生书丹，号称“现代三绝”。1170字的碑文以简洁的文笔记述了西南联大的历史。碑的背面是由联大校志委员会纂列、唐兰教授篆额、刘晋年教授书丹的联大“抗战以来从军学生名单”。上列从军名单中共843人，其中有清华大学校长梅贻琦先生之子梅祖彦。

岁月变迁

纪念碑原碑现在位于云南师范大学校园内“一二？一”四烈士墓西侧，是联大在昆明的珍贵遗迹之一，北大校园里的西南联合大学纪念碑，面西而立，是北大于1989年5月4日照原碑复制所得。

历史溯源

1937年7月7日卢沟桥事变后，日军南侵，平津危急，原属北平的北京大学、清华大学，天津的南开大学数百名师生紧急迁移，于1938年4月26日抵达昆明，成立了西南联合大学。

抗战胜利之后，在联大各校即将复员返回之际，为了缅怀八年支持之辛苦，纪念三校“为一体，如胶结；同艰难，共欢悦”的珍贵历史，更为了用这段光辉历史去警示和教育将来的学子，联大师生一致决定修建一座西南联合大学纪念碑，1946年5月纪念碑落成，立于联大校园。

寻章摘句

宗璞先生在《燕园碑寻》中评价说：这是一块极有意义的碑，她不评风花雪月，不记君恩臣工，而是概括了这一段历史。

Distinguishing feature

With a five meters in height and 2.7 meters in width, the tablet stands on a circular arch pedestal, the inscription on the frontage was wrote by Feng Youlan, carved by Wen Yiduo, Luo Yong wrote in red ink for it, therefore the monument was known for modern three tops. The history of Southwestern Associated University was described briefly in 1170 characters. The back of monument is the list of students who joined the army since the beginning of the anti-Japanese war, which listed by SAU records committee, carved by professor Tang Lan, and Liu Jinnian wrote in red ink for this. There are 843 names in this list, including the son of the president of Tsinghua University Mei Zuiyan.

History

The original monument is located by the west side of 12.1 martyrs tomb in Yunnan Normal University now, it's one of the rare relics when SAU in Kunming. The south-facing monument in Peking university is a duplicate imitated by Peking university on May 4th,1989.
