History
The Stone Boat was built by He Shen, the most corrupted minister in Chinese history. In 1784, Emperor Qianlong awarded He Shen the Shuchun Garden, which was the location of today’s Yan Yuan. The Stone Boat was one of the many luxurious palaces that He Shen built in this private garden.
The construction of the Stone Boat was totally decided by He Shen himself. It was an imitation of The Clear YanFang in the Summer Palace. In fact, it was forbidden for a minister to do so according to the law of that day. But He Shen was not afraid at all. Becuase he was exempted from punishment and went on with his career as a corrupted minister. When his son married with a princess, it was possible for He Shen to enjoy this with safety.
